2011 PLP and CTP Application Process has begun.

The Sorensen Institute is proud to announce that the application process for the 2011 Political Leaders Program and the 2011 Candidate Training Program has begun! Below, you will find some helpful information concerning the two programs.

The Political Leaders Program is a leadership development program for residents of Virginia interested in becoming more active in public service. Participation in this program has become a traditional “first step” for future political leaders in the Commonwealth. Participants spend one weekend a month from March through December traveling across the state along with 30-32 other civic minded individuals. Cost of the Political Leaders Program is $2250.

The Candidate Training Program is an intensive, four-day program focused on the fundamentals of running a winning campaign for office. Participants will explore the nuts and bolts of building a strong campaign from the ground up- all within the context of ethics and principled public service. Cost of the Candidate Training Program is $750 for a double room and $900 for a single room.

The Sorensen Institute seeks participants from all political affiliations, socio-economic backgrounds andprofessions from Virginia. Scholarships and tuition assistance are available. JOB POSTING: Administrative Assistant at NFIB, Richmond

Position: Administrative Assistant, State Public Policy
Organization: National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), Richmond

Classification:  Part time (25 hours per week)

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent; some college preferred.
  2. Two (2) years administrative assistant experience.
  3. Working knowledge of the Virginia General Assembly is helpful.
  4. Proficiency in Microsoft Office for Windows required. Strong wordprocessing skills, PowerPoint and spreadsheet experience are essential.
  5. Experience in coordinating travel plans and meeting arrangements.
  6. Good oral and written communications skills necessary. Excellent interpersonal, customer service and organizational skills required. Must be able to multi-task in a high-energy environment and work independently as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Administrative Assistant provides administrative support to the State Director and other staff members in Virginia by researching issues and legislation; drafting letters, talking points, memorandums and other documents; interacting with members, prospective members, legislative staff and elected officials by phone and in person. Assists with general office duties including answering the phone, filing, copying and faxing. Prepares business correspondence and reports. Provides support on various projects including maintaining the legislative tracking database, compiling and updating fundraising schedules, and assisting in organizing member lobby day at the capitol. Interacts with all departments, employees, and vendors of NFIB in a professional manner. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Coffee In "40 Under 40"

The Washington Business Journal recently announced this year's 40 Under 40 awards program to recognize the Washington region's brightest young business leaders based on demonstrated business success over the past 12 to 18 months. Sorensen's Brett Coffee (PLP 08) is among the 40 honorees. Congratulations, Brett!

    After graduating from the University of Virginia in 2006, Aaron traveled to St. Louis to participate in and study local government as the recipient of a Coro Fellowship. He continues to study in St. Louis where is simultaneously earning his Master's Degree in Social Work from Washington University and a Master's in Divinity from Eden Theological Seminary.
