This year, the Sorensen Institute is proud to claim several congressional candidates as our Alumni. These Sorensen grads are running in United States Congressional races all across Virginia and are striving to implement the lessons they learned at Sorensen into their campaigns. These candidates give hope to the Sorensen idea that politics can be about the heated clash of ideas, but that our differences do not have to divide us. Below you'll find a link to each of the candidates websites.

McClellan Welcomes Baby Boy

Jennifer McClellan (PLP 2001; CTP 2005) and David Mills welcomed Jackson McClellan Mills this week. Jack arrived at 5:19 p.m. on August 9, weighing in at 7 lbs., 6 oz.  Mom, Dad, and Jack are back home and doing well. Congratulations, Jenn and Dave!

Craig Wins in Chesapeake

Daily Press Endorses Cherry in Newport News

The Daily Press has endorsed Saundra Cherry (CTP Winter 2009) for City Council in Newport News. The election will be Tuesday May 4.

Va-Pilot Endorses Two Sorensen Alums For Office in Chesapeake

The Virginian-Pilot has endorsed two Sorensen graduates for office in the Chesapeake elections scheduled for Tuesday, May 4.

Bryan Collins (PLP 06, CTP 06) was endorsed in his run for re-election to the Chesapeake City Council.

Christie New Craig (PLP 06) was endorsed in her bid for an at-large seat on the Chesapeake School Board.

Ball Declares Victory in VA-1

Krystal Ball (CTP Spring 2009) has announced that she is the presumptive Democratic nominee to run against incumbent Republican Rob Wittman in Virginia's 1st Congressional District.

Norris Elected to Second Term as Mayor in Charlottesville

Dave Norris (CTP 06) was elected today by his fellow councilors to serve a second term as Mayor of the city of Charlottesville.

Dave won a second term to Council in November.

Del-Elect Abbott Credits Sorensen Institute as "Best Advice"

Delegate-elect Robin Abbott (CTP Spring 09) said in a recent interview the "best advice" she got before her successful campaign came from the Sorensen Institute.

The University of Virginia's Cavalier Daily has a story in today's issue about the successes of Sorensen graduates in the recent elections. The article includes interviews with Bob Gibon and James Brown (CTP Spring 09), who was elected Sheriff in Charlottesville last week.

News Leader Spotlights Sorensen

This morning's edition of the Staunton News Leader spotlights the success of Sorensen graduates in the recent elections.

The University of Virginia's Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership offers two political training programs to those interested in becoming more active in public service in Virginia – be they Republicans, Democrats or independents. In the wake of Tuesday's elections, it's clear that the programs are working.

    After graduating from the University of Virginia in 2006, Aaron traveled to St. Louis to participate in and study local government as the recipient of a Coro Fellowship. He continues to study in St. Louis where is simultaneously earning his Master's Degree in Social Work from Washington University and a Master's in Divinity from Eden Theological Seminary.
