High School Leaders Program 2007: Day 2
High School Leaders Program Class of 2007
Blog Update: Day 2, Sunday July 8
Reported by: Uchenna Agbim, George Marshall High School and Drew Domitrovits, William Monroe High School
Today was a fun day! We all had the pleasure of the Challenge Discovery ropes course near Richmond. After splitting up into three groups (Sloths, Moles and Llamas) each group went to various rope courses including a rock climbing course, a tight rope course and a course called 'Charlotte’s Web' in which we had to climb, crawl and be lifted through a web of ropes without shaking the web. At the end of it all, we realized that the activities at Challenge Discovery had several lessons that we could all apply to politics, leadership, and government. For example, in the rock climbing activity, we realized that in order to get to the top in government, we need the help of people we can trust. In the tight rope challenge, we learned that to get across challenges in life, we need helping hands, skills and strategy. Finally, in the Charlotte’s Web course, we learned that we must compromise, work together and think outside the box in order to be a good leader.
After Challenge Discovery we were all very sweaty, tired and most of all, HUNGRY. For dinner we headed over to Bottoms Up Pizza where we ate delicious pizza! Since we were all starving, we finished almost seven pizzas in about half an hour…or close to that.
All in all, I had a great day and I would love to experience it again!

It was quite nice being able to sleep in today, after running around campus, sightseeing and visiting the corner. We awoke, got ready, and at 10:30 we were road bound on our way to Richmond for the Challenge Discovery ropes courses. The staff was very nice and personable, and they made the day quite enjoyable, when they talked us through a lot of the challenges we had to endure. We started off by having to lift people up and pass them through shapes tied between the tress without disturbing the ropes. It was difficult, but it taught us teamwork, and while everyone was quiet on the way there, at the end of the day after experiencing the climbing wall and the canopy obstacle course together, we all talked the whole way back, and when we stopped in Richmond for pizza, it was quite noisy actually. Upon arriving back to Bice, we immediately went down stairs and watched the documentary entitled "The Perfect Candidate" talking about the 1994 senate race between Chuck Robb and Oliver North that gained significant national attention. After that we all went upstairs and some gathered to study, while others gathered for a game of Skip-Bo, or to catch a movie, I think today was a good way to start off the two weeks.
