HSLP Alumni News
Colin Hood (HSLP 07) won a "landslide victory" yesterday as President of the Student Council at the University of Virginia. Congratulations Colin!
Caroline Wulf is studying at American University where she has received a post-graduate fellowship from the Women's Campaign Forum in D.C. She is also currently working two internships: in Congressman Rob Wittman's Washington office and with the Women & Politics Institute of American University. Caroline finished with a 3.8 GPA last semester. Congratulations Caroline!
Mallory Johnson (CLP 09) and Beau Wright (HSLP 06) are among the graduates of Sorensen youth programs who will be working at the General Assembly this session.
Johnson and Wright are among just 15 students at the college of William and Mary who were selected to participate in the college's Richmond Program— which consists of an internship during the session, and a seminar taught by Senator Tommy Norment for the additional time in the semester. Beau will be interning for Senator Dave Marsden and Mallory for Senator Norment.
Dreama Montrief Johnson (HSLP 04) was interviewed for a story about UVA's College Guides program published recently in the Greene County Record.

Harrisonburg was the site of a recent reception for alumni, board members and interested recruits for the Sorensen Institute's 2010 season. The event was held at the studios of WVPT. Speakers included (from left to right in photo) Ken Alger (PLP 09), Maribel Castaneda (HSLP 08) and Bo Trumbo (PLP 09).

Ben Swanson (HSLP 09) has been appointed to the Fairfax County Government's Environmental Quality Advisory Committee. Congratulations Ben!

Ashley Murphy (HSLP 09) is the author of an essay published today in the Roanoke Times about her Sorensen experience this summer.
The essay titled "Program at Sorensen taught this student a lot" begins: As a student, I'm always looking for programs to help me find a possible career. When my government teacher nominated me for the Sorensen Institute as a high school leader, I was skeptical at first. I hadn't heard of the institute before and almost didn't apply. Looking back at my experience at the University of Virginia, I cannot imagine how much I would've regretted not applying to such an unbelievable course.

Ladi Smith (HSLP 08) has been awarded the first-ever John Blackburn Scholarship to the University of Virginia.

Congratulations Ladi!

Evan Davis (HSLP 06) has just wrapped up his first year at the University of Virginia. He has also been working as a volunteer firefighter for the Stony Point Volunteer Fire Company in Albemarle County. Evan writes, "I began working for SPVFC in September 2008, and I was recently promoted from a probationary member to full member status. In addition to working as a firefighter for SPVFC, I was also recently given the positions of webmaster for the Company as well as Co-Chair of the Recruitment and Retention Committee and thus am responsible for coordinating and implementing all SPVFC recruitment activities at UVA and PVCC (Piedmont Valley Community College)." Way to go Evan!
