The Sorensen Institute's Bob Gibson and Coy Barefoot participated in a panel discussion recently in Charlottesville exploring civility in public debate and discourse. The event was sponsored by the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression and titled "Free Speech or Disruption: Balancing the Rights to Speak and Hear."
Panelists included Bob Gibson, Executive Director of the Sorensen Institute; Elaine Jones, retired Director-Counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the first African-American woman to graduate from the UVa School of Law; Robert O'Neil, Director of the Thomas Jefferson Center and former President of the University of Virginia; Dahlia Lithwick, Senior Editor for Slate.com and a Contributing Editor to Newsweek; and John Whitehead, CEO and Founder of the Rutherford Institute. Coy Barefoot served as the moderator.

Marc Johnson presented the Class of 2009 superlatives at their graduation ceremony on Saturday, December 12 in Charlottesville.

Bob Gibson of the Sorensen Institute welcomed class members and guests to the Saturday, December 12 graduation ceremony for the Political Leaders Program Class of 2009. This event was held in the historic Dome Room of the University of Virginia Rotunda.

Steve Cochran presented each staff member with a gift from the Political Leaders Program Class of 2009.

Andrea Young of the PLP Class of 2009 (center in photo) joins Class Chair Bryce Reeves (at left) in presenting the class gift of $36,000 to support the work of the Sorensen Institute. Bryce Reeves was selected by his classmates to speak on Friday evening, December 11 in Charlottesville as part of the Political Leaders Program's graduation weekend festitivites.
Bryce reflected on the principles at the heart of the Sorensen experience.
Dr. Dan Carey (PLP 07), President of the Medical Society of Virginia, spoke recently on Charlottesville radio about the healthcare debate in America.
At the 2008 Alumni Reunion, two graduates from Sorensen's first year shared some of their memories: Nancy Finch, a graduate of the Political Leaders Program Class of Fall 1994, and Roy McAfee, a graduate of the Political Leaders Program Class of Spring 1994.
