College Leaders Program Application

Yes, we are currently accepting applications to the
College Leaders Program.

Please read all the instructions below.
At the bottom of this page you will find a link to access the online application to the CLP 2010.

The deadline for this application is 5pm on Friday March 5, 2010.


Instructions

1. PLEASE NOTE: This is an online application. There is no way to save a partially completed application and return to work on it later.  For this reason, we recommend that you prepare everything you will need to complete the application in advance.

2. In addition to completing the online application in its entirety, PLEASE MAIL a copy of your college transcript (official or unofficial are accepted) and have one letter of recommendation sent to the following address:

Your application is not complete until we have received these two documents at the above address.

3. The CLP online application includes a series of short-answer questions in addition to a 500-word essay.  You will also be asked to provide some basic contact and background information. See below for details. You will be able to copy/paste your answers into the online application.

4. If you are not able to fill out the online application, you may submit a paper application that includes all the information listed below by mail (Sorensen Institute, P.O. Box 400206, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4206) or by fax (434) 982-5536. Send to the attention of April Auger.

5. Some applicants will be selected for a personal interview as the next part of the application process. Once you complete and submit your online application, you will be given the schedule for this year's interviews. Please check that schedule for the interview nearest you, make a note of the date, time, and location, and plan to attend if you are selected as a finalist. If you have a conflict with the interview schedule, please contact April Auger to make arrangements for an alternative date.

6. Attendance at all sessions by all participants is very important to the success of the program. Before applying, please take a moment to confirm that you will be available to attend the full program.

7. Again, please remember to prepare everything you will need prior to  filling out the online application. There is no way to save your work and return to it later.

  

Short-Answer Questions

The CLP online application includes a number of short-answer questions. Be aware that your answers are a significant part of the selection process and very important to making admissions decisions. Please answer each question fully. The short-answer questions on the College Leaders Program online application are as follows:

* Why are you interested in attending the College Leaders Program?

* Why are you interested in government, politics and public policy?

* References: Please list the names and phone numbers of two individuals, excluding family members, who have known you for more than one year who we can contact in reference to your application. Briefly describe the nature and duration of the relationship.

* Please list any major commitments or events that might conflict with the program dates.

* Please tell us about your activities. Include community service, leadership and political activities and any offices held. (you will be able to copy/paste your activities list or resume into the online application)

* Is there anything else you would like us to know or take into consideration that has not been included on this application form?

* How did you learn about the College Leaders Program?

  

Essay

Please write an essay of no more than 500 words in response to one of the following:

A. Describe a situation in which you have exercised a leadership role. What were you trying to accomplish? Were you successful in accomplishing your goals? Why or why not? How did you interact with the people you were trying to lead or with other leaders in the group? What did you learn from this experience?

B. Briefly outline a public policy issue that you care about. Why is this issue important to you? Why should this issue be important to others? Suggest a policy solution? Defend your argument for why your solution is the best one.

C. Describe an experience in your life that had a profound impact on you. Discuss the experience and how it has affected your goals for the future. How would you be different if you had not had this experience?

You should also be prepared with the following information to successfully complete the CLP application:

* Name

* Email address

* Cell phone number

* Home or permanent address, home phone number

* University/College name

* Full mailing address at school

* School telephone number (if different from cell phone)

* College major and minor (if any)

* Name of the high school you graduated from and its location (city, state)

 

Please remember, once you start the application there will be no way to save partial work
so make sure you have everything you need to complete the application.
