R. Marc Johnson

Assistant Director, Director of Programs

Marc currently serves as the Assistant Director and Director of Programs.  In this role, he has responsibility for overseeing all of the Sorensen Institute's programs, including all program planning, development, operations, analysis and evaluation.  He also works with the Executive Director on other projects and administration and staffs the state and regional boards.  Marc originally came to the Sorensen Institute in 2004 as the College Leaders Program Manager, and then worked as the Director of Youth Programs until taking his current position in the summer of 2008.

Marc is often an invited speaker to student groups around the Commonwealth on the topics of leadership and civic engagement. He was appointed by Governors Warner and Kaine to the Virginia Commission on National and Community Service, where he served as Chairman of the Programs Committee. In the Charlottesville community, Marc serves as President of the Board of Service Dogs of Virginia and Vice President of the Leadership Charlottesville Alumni Association. He previously served as Chairman of the Young Guarde Council of the William & Mary Alumni Association and President of the local Charlottesville chapter.

Marc holds a Master's of Education degree from the University of Virginia, where he studied educational leadership, foundations and policy.  He also graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the College of William & Mary with a degree in government, where he was awarded the James Frederic Carr Memorial Cup, given to one member of the graduating class on the basis of scholarship, character and leadership.  He is a graduate of the Sorensen Institute's College Leaders Program, Class of 2003, and a graduate of Leadership Charlottesville.
