Growing the Cigarette

Sarah Milov, VFH Fellow and assistant professor at the University of Virginia’s Corcoran Department of History, will present her research in a talk titled "Growing the Cigarette," a revisionist history of tobacco in the twentieth century that takes farmers, government officials and citizen-activists as its main characters. By looking beyond “Big Tobacco,” Milov demonstrates that, paradoxically, smoking was a product of an expanded vision of the state, and that the politics of antismoking were born of an impulse to make visible the costs of smoking to smokers, the state, and workplaces. Her talk will be held at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities Conference Center, 145 Ednam Drive. There is no charge and the talk is open to the public.
